Facade Tectonics 2016 World Congress
October 10-11, 2016 | Los Angeles

The Facade Tectonics Institute has issued a call for papers for its 2016 Annual Conference and inaugural World Congress, which will include speaking and poster presentations, panel discussions, workshops and exhibitors. A minimum of five tracks are planned over two days, including 25 sessions and 75 speaker presentations. Abstracts, papers and presentations will be subject to rigorous peer review as a condition of acceptance to the conference proceedings. Those interested are encouraged to submit an abstract by the March 7th deadline.

The Institute is soliciting abstracts for papers that address aspects of building skin ranging from history to theory and practice, including, but not limited to:

  • Design Processes
  • Historical Evolution
  • Facade Futures
  • Performance
  • Materials and Processes
  • Systems and Technology
  • Fabrication
  • Project Delivery Means-and-Methods
  • Collaborative Project Delivery Strategies (Design-Assist, IPD, etc.)
  • Case Study Applications
  • Education in Building Facade Design, Technology and Science

...with respect to the following:

  • Metal Curtainwall Systems
  • Precast Curtainwall Systems
  • Rainscreen Systems
  • Textile Membrane Facades
  • Structural Glass Facades (Structure and Glass Systems Integration)
  • Double-Skin Facades
  • Adaptive Facade Systems (Intelligent, Dynamic, Kinetic, etc.)

Paper selection will aim to be inclusive of a broad range of topics as a means to support a similarly wide-ranging and robust conference dialogue. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Authors of select papers will be invited to present in one of the conference sessions. Themed sessions will be organized in response to the papers received.

Submission Guidelines

Abstracts of 300 words or less should be submitted by March 7. You can submit your abstract here.

Consider joining Facade Tectonics! However, being a member is not required for the submission of an abstract. You will need to create a free account for the uploading of your abstract. This will help you track your submission and its status.

Authors should no longer use the PDF submission form. Please use the link above to submit abstracts.

Important Notice for Internet Explorer Users:
In case you are unable to copy and paste your abstract, you will need to set Internet Explorer to Compatibility Mode. To do so, please follow these instructions:

  1. Open the settings menu by clicking on the gear icon at the top left of the browser window.
  2. Click "Compatibility View settings" in the menu.
  3. A small window should pop up.
  4. In the section titled, "Add this website", "facadetectonics.org" should automatically be entered. If not, manually enter it into the input field.
  5. Click the "Add" button.
  6. Click the "Close" button at the bottom right of the pop-up window.
  7. The page should refresh and you should be able to paste your abstract.

Abstracts must include:

  • Title
  • Lead Author, Title, Affiliation
  • Supporting Authors, Titles, Affiliations
  • Presenting Author (if different than lead author)
  • 2-6 Keywords

Abstract must exclude:

  • Images
  • Footnotes
  • Supplemental files

Abstracts should clearly state the following in as few words as possible:

  • Introduction of problem.
  • The nature of the investigation (what was done).
  • The principle methods used in the investigation (how it was done).
  • The findings and relevance of findings (what was learned and why it's important).

Full manuscripts (papers of 4000 words or less) must be received by June 6. A template for papers will be provided. Papers will be blind peer reviewed. Accepted papers will either be accepted as is, or returned with reviewer comments and a request for revision. Revised papers must be returned by the final submission deadline.

Membership

Membership is required as a condition of final acceptance of completed manuscripts. The Institute is running a special 50% discount on membership for anyone submitting an abstract. Individuals that are employed by member organizations are not required to have individual memberships in order to submit an abstract.

Conference Registration

Conference registration is required by the June 6 submission date for full manuscripts as a condition of final acceptance. The registration rate is $345, representing a 50% speaker’s discount from the $690 full conference registration price. Event registration will be opening soon, and instructions will be provided.
